Myth Bust graphic: 'Soy messes with your hormones' struck through, replaced with 'The research says otherwise' — 41 clinical studies, 1,753 men, no significant effect on testosterone or estrogen. ButNotMeat India.

The Truth About Soy And Hormones

If you've spent any time around gym culture or bodybuilding forums, you've probably heard it: soy will mess with your hormones. It's one of the most persistent myths in nutrition, and it's been repeated so often that most people just accept it as fact.

Here's the problem — the actual clinical research doesn't back it up.

In 2021, researchers published an updated meta-analysis in the journal Reproductive Toxicology, pulling together 41 clinical studies to settle the question properly. Total testosterone was measured across 1,753 men, free testosterone in 752, and estrogen markers (estradiol and estrone) in over a thousand more. The result: no significant effect of soy or isoflavone intake on any of these hormone levels — and this held true regardless of how much soy people ate or how long the studies ran.

Where did this myth come from?

Soy contains isoflavones, plant compounds that are structurally similar to estrogen — which is exactly why they got a reputation as "feminizing." But structural similarity isn't the same as functional effect, and decades of case reports and small studies never held up under a proper large-scale meta-analysis. The 2021 update is the most comprehensive look at this question to date, and the conclusion is clear.

So what does this mean for you?

If soy is part of your regular diet — tofu, soy milk, edamame, tempeh — the hormone concern simply isn't supported by the evidence. It's a myth that outlived the research that could have corrected it years ago.
