Til Has 8x The Calcium Of Milk-myth-bust

🌱 You Don't Need Dairy For Calcium 🌱

"Where do you get your calcium from?" is usually the first question anyone asks when milk isn't on the plate. The honest answer: from foods that were already in Indian kitchens long before dairy became the default calcium source.

Til (sesame seeds) and ragi (finger millet) are both naturally dense in calcium — no fortification, no supplements, just two ingredients that have been part of Indian cooking for generations.

The numbers:
🥛 Cow's milk: ~120mg calcium per 100ml
🌾 Ragi (finger millet): ~344mg calcium per 100g — roughly 3x milk, gram for gram
✨ Sesame seeds (til): ~978mg calcium per 100g — roughly 8x milk, gram for gram

(Figures are per-100g/100ml comparisons, not per typical serving size — a spoon of til or a bowl of ragi porridge won't match a full glass of milk in absolute terms, but they're far from "no calcium without dairy.")

Where this actually shows up in a plate:
🍚 Ragi porridge or ragi roti for breakfast
🍬 Til chikki or til laddoo as a snack
🥗 A spoon of til mixed into chutneys or sprinkled over sabzi

None of this requires replacing your whole diet — it just means dairy was never the only way to get there.

A note on absorption: dairy calcium is generally well-absorbed by the body. Plant sources vary — some leafy greens, for instance, contain oxalates that reduce how much calcium the body actually absorbs, which is part of why we've kept this post focused on til and ragi specifically rather than a longer, less precise list.
